Another Round Of Holiday Deals!

As the holiday season is now nearing the "point of no return" for online ordering, I took a gander through one of my favorite "budget sites" GolfEtail to see if they had anything left on the shelves worth picking up before the end of the year.

First, get started at RakutenRakuten is a "cash back" affiliate program that allows you to earn a percentage of the sale back through a rebate check that is mailed out quarterly. As a bonus, if you use this link, you will get a $10 bonus when you make your first $25 in purchases. Rakuten works at sites like Rock Bottom Golf, GolfEtail, Callaway, TaylorMade and many others, so check out the full list when you sign up.

Next up, after you've signed up for Rakuten, you can head over to GolfEtail for an additional $10 savings on any purchase of $75 or more when you sign up for their newsletter. With GolfEtail's already low prices, it can be tough to get to $75 in a single order, but it's still pretty easy if you find the right items. What I always look for during GolfEtail's sales are consumables (balls, tees, gloves, etc...) and long term accessories like bags, clothes and shoes. The trick to handling GolfEtail is that you need to get a bit lucky with sizes to get a killer deal, but watch for them, they come up often.

The New Balance Minimum Spikeless shoe is one such deal. If you've been fitted for NB in the past, these $100+ shoes can be had for just $54.99 and they ship for free. These shoes feature a 2 year waterproof guarantee and a moisture wicking insole to keep your feet dry during the warmer summer months as well. As of this post, there are sizes ranging from 7 to 14 available in a variety of colors.

If you're working on the consistency of your swing, there's not much better than the Swing Caddie SC200 Personal Launch Monitor. While I'm currently using the Flightscope Mevo monitor (it integrated with my phone to track data long term) the SC200 was my first experience with a PLM system. During my time with the SC200, I was very impressed with the accuracy and consistency of the unit. The SC200 measures carry distance, swing speed, ball speed and then computes the smash factor based on the taken measurements. Overall, it's great for building a tighter dispersion pattern on your wedges and seeing the club head speeds of your longer clubs.

One that I recently discovered was that many retailers sell "mint condition" used balls. One such offering from GolfEtail is the ball I play, the Titleist AVX. These balls sell for $40-50 a dozen but can be had for almost a fraction of that cost in "mint" condition. The 3 dozen pack of AVX balls at GolfEtail are currently marked at just under $60, or about $20 a dozen. Not bad for a ball that may have been hit a few times and left somewhere. There are plenty of other great options on GolfEtail as well, so check them out here.

Another product that I never seem to have enough of is good hats to wear to the course. Hats are good for keeping the sun off our heads during the summer months and keeping the heat from escaping during the colder months. With selections from just about everyone and lower prices, you may be able to save a bit of cash and still look amazing on the course, or maybe find a few gifts for some of your friends without breaking the bank.

Now with all of that said, what should you avoid from places like this? Well, that depends on how serious you are about your golf game. Retailers like GolfEtail usually provide a very small amount of first run clubs. Instead, they tend to focus on slightly older models. For example, Their driver selection at the moment includes the Cobra King LTD Pro, King F8 and King F9 drivers. The prices are $199.99, $179.99 and $379.99 respectively. The F8 at $179.99 is quite a deal, but keep in mind that this particular club is only available in Senior Flex shafts. This means you can find a great deal, but for the most part, fitting options are non-existent, so don't buy something based off a great price that won't fit you down the road.

Next up, do not, ever, under any circumstances, purchase shoes that you have never tried on from any online source. While most shoes have a 14-30 day comfort guarantee, the chances of getting them out on the course enough to know if they are going to destroy your ankles during that time is almost zero. With that said if you have a favorite shoe style and size that happens to pop up, grab them if the price is right. Like the New Balance deal above, there are some fantastic prices available if the shoe fits.

The last item to avoid is the classic "bagged sets" of clubs. While these may seem like a great way to start playing the game, the quality of many of these boxed retail sets is low at best. Companies that were once big names in the industry have been absorbed by others and now those names may not mean what you think anymore. Great ones to skip out on would be Orlimar, Nitro, Precise, Aspire and Intech. most of these sets are made from the cheapest components possible and will fall apart in no time at all. For just a few dollars more, you can opt for a complete set from Callaway (Strata), Wilson  (Profile) or Tour Edge. The higher quality gear will make a difference starting out and last you longer than the cheaper options.

So that wraps up a quick look at GolfEtail's deal and some "what should you buy and what not to buy" options from discount golf retailers. If you have any that I missed, feel free to leave them in the comments below.

Going Pro: Year End Recap And What's Next? - Episode 5

Although 2019 didn't have all the forward movement I wanted in my aspirations of becoming a PGA Member, some big steps were made towards the bigger goal. As the year comes to a close, I am still officially "Pre-Qualified" for the Professional Golf Management course, my game is slowly finding it's way back to being decent and my work-life balance is much better right now than it was during those 80-90 hour summer weeks.

2020 should be a big year for goals as my next shot at the playing test will come in April (if the schedule holds as it is set now) and my lesson books begin to fill up for the summer months. I'm hopeful that I can have more time to commit to the process and teaching this year, but we will see how those plans come together as the winter progresses.

For now, enjoy Episode 5 of Going Pro and let me know in the comments on the YouTube page or even in the section below what you'd like to know more about. see me cover more of or even just generic questions you may have for me, I'd love to answer what I can for you.

Golfer's Gift Guide: Five Great Gift Ideas For Golfers

Yes, it's the season of giving once again and now that Black Friday has past and we are down to the nitty-gritty of the gift finding season, I felt it was only right to once again break out the blog (not a video this time) and put up a few of the best items I could find that should help every golfer play better, without breaking your budget. These may be stocking-stuffer class for some people, for those on tighter budgets, gifts like this are more than able to stand on their own (they are also great "from the kids gifts" as well!)

Yes, this annual favorite once again makes the list of amazing deals. This sub $30 putting trainer is something that everyone can use (the entire family can have a blast with this one) and will make everyone with a few feet of carpet a better putter in no time. If you team it with some of the single item coupon deals, you'll find this guy well under $25.

Most people only think of an umbrella for rainy day use on the course. While not everyone is an all-weather golfer, a good umbrella is still a must have item. A proper umbrella by today's standards are extremely useful for providing shade during the hotter summer months as well. While the BagBoy model above ticks all the boxes that a good umbrella should, it's not the only one out there. What you should look for is a dual canopy model that offers UV protection. That way, your golfer is covered both in the rain (and wind) and during the heat of day. A good buying tip here is that if you don't know what brand your golfer loves at the moment, stay away from branded items. You never want to give a Callaway fan a TaylorMade umbrella, if you know what I mean. While there are "good, better, best" options out there, you shouldn't need to spend more than $30-40 to get a quality umbrella, especially when you find one on sale.

So, this one is near and dear to my heart as it was the one thing that really pushed me to lower my scores quickly. The App for iOS or Android is totally free (ad supported) but for $19.99 a year, you can access the Premium Functions of the App as well as the Web Portal of playing data. This data will prove amazingly valuable in determining where you need to put in the practice time to lower your scores. For example, one may think their putting is the weakest part of their game because they 3 putt too many times a round. What they fail to see is that they are putting from 50+ feet on almost every green they hit. Instead, it's their approach accuracy from 120 yards in that needs work. GolfPad GPS will shows you exactly what the weakest part of your game is in just a few rounds of use. While you don't need the Golf Tags to use the system, it's much easier to just tap your phone to the end of the club rather than having to manually enter the data on each shot, but it is an additional $70 to get a full set of tags. That said, it's well worth the investment if it's in the holiday budget. The part I like the most about this setup is that the only item it uses is a phone, which most people already have. I even set it up to work with an older phone that isn't hooked up any more. I simply download the courses via Wi-Fi before heading out (just open a new round at the course you are playing next from home and scroll through the holes to load the maps into the cache of the App) and then go hit the course for perfect mapping every time. It's a great way to improve quickly and do so without spending a ton of cash.

I think one of the reviewers said it best... "If you take your golf very seriously, perhaps you should stay with your Odyssey cover, If you like to laugh off your weekend misses, get the Superman cover.."

Yes, personalizing a bag can be a lot of fun, especially if the golfer in your life is your "Superman" or "Batman". This one targets the kiddos out there as the perfect "sub-$25" gift idea for anyone's bag. The best part about this one is that you can't really miss with any of the 'creatures' that are out there because if they remind you of the golfer in your life, then it's a win-win for everyone.

Everyone has their own way of marking their ball on the course. Some use a blue marker to make three dots, others use a red one to circle the number on the ball. The great things is there's no right or wrong way to make your ball more identifiable, which is where Tin Cup comes in. These metal templates slip over the ball and then a Sharpie is used to fill in the shape cut into the template to make a mark on the ball. From flags to 4 leaf clovers, there's something for everyone on your list and at $15-20 before any discounts are applied, these are a great budget gift idea that just makes the game a bit more fun.

Going Pro: What's In My Bag For 2020 - Episode 4

I have to admit that I love the What's In The Bag segments that everyone posts on YouTube. It's one of my favorite things to do, and obviously, if you're reading this right now, you must like them as well. Now, take this for what it is as there's no way you should play what I play (unless you are fitted for it) but here is my bag line up for 2020.

Driver - 9.0° Wilson Cortex with 76g Fujikura Speeder 757 TS X-Stiff Shaft

  -  The Wilson Cortex was the winner of Driver Vs. Driver Season 2. The popular Wilson Golf show aired on the Golf Channel in November of last year and was probably most remembered for the gaff where they showed the winning design in an on-screen graphic about 5 minutes before it was actually revealed. The Cortex is still the most technological piece of gear that Wilson has ever released. The carbon fiber crown allowed Wilson to position more weight where needed for a greater level of forgiveness and the weighting system proved to offer performance as good as anything else on the market at that time. Unfortunately, the $499 price tag put it square in the sights of TaylorMade's M5/M6 and Callaway's Epic Flash series drivers, which killed any momentum it had gained from the show. Still, it was a Wilson driver that performed as well as anything on the market, but as well doesn't sell against the big boys. Fast forward to the end of 2020 (or about a year) and the price has been cut in half and it is one of the best value drivers in the game today. I've swapped out my stock Fujikura Atmos Black 7X shaft for my trusted Fujikura Speeder 757 Tour Spec and love the performance of the club.

Irons - 2-PW - Wilson Staff Model Blades - KBS C-Taper X130 Shafts

 - Wilson has won more majors than any other manufacturer, most recently with Gary Woodland's victory in the 2019 US Open at Pebble Beach. Woodland used the Wilson Staff Model Blades with the blacked out KBS C-Taper shafts in them to notch that victory and that is the exact same setup that I have in my bag today. The custom specs on the irons are 2° upright and 1/4" longer than standard. They are outfitted with the KBS C-Taper (standard finish) shafts and Golf Pride Tour Velvet grips with just one wrap of tape. The Staff Model Blades were an easy upgrade from the FG100's that I had been using that had become damaged over the few seasons that I had them. They play almost the same as the 100's, but the extra bit of toe weight allows the face to square up a bit more for me, which eliminates that short right shot that was an issue with the 100's.

Wedges - Wilson PMP RAW - 52°, 56° & 60° - KBS C-Taper X130 Shafts

 - The PMP wedges have been in my bag for a few seasons now. This year, after experimenting with the TaylorMade Milled Grind wedges, I ventured back to the Wilson brand, but opted for the more "blemish hiding" RAW finish. While most people associate the RAW finish with rust, the reason why I liked it more than the frost finish that I've used in the past is that it hides the scratches and dings better. Currently, I'm carrying three different lofts, but there is a good chance that the 60° model will find a place in the garage bag going forward as the 56° model is spaced out perfectly with the 52° and my 46° pitching wedge. It's in the bag for now, but if I find a driving iron or decide that the 2 hybrid needs to get back in the bag for the wetter months, it will be the one that gets pulled.

Putter - Wilson Staff Infinite Lake Shore - 35"

 - When you pick up the perfect putter, you just know it. For me, finding something that could replace my nearly 20 year old Odyssey Tri-Hot has been almost impossible. As I was working in the shop, I kept trying the Lake Shore model and just found that it set up almost perfectly for me from the start. Once I mad a small forward press on the shaft, the club felt absolutely perfect and swung like a dream. The excess length (I typically use a 34" putter) helped balance the heavier head and really forced a smoother tempo from me. I can't see anything dethroning this one anytime soon, but I do love to test out putters.

Ball - Titleist AVX Yellow

 - "Soft Is Slow" has become an anthem on the internet since the My Golf Spy Ball Test Results hit the airwaves. Unfortunately, what the tests failed to show was that the flight of the ball can have almost as much impact now how well it fits a player as the speed of the ball off the club face. Now, kudos to MGS for doing this test because what it really did is bring into focus the ball itself and how different factors can impact your game. For example, I could get more distance from a different ball, but I may sacrifice control. I could get more spin from a ball, but I may not be able to flight it as low as I want. So many things go into a ball fitting and MGS highlighted the need for every golfer on the planet to consider having one done - or at the very least, the importance of using the same ball consistently. After nearly 4 months of ball testing, and two false starts, the Titleist AVX became that ball for me. The lower, penetrating flight combined with the lesser spin into the green created the perfect blend of performance for my game. If you are a high ball hitter, I highly recommend trying the AVX over the Pro V1 or Pro V1x.

Bag - Wilson Staff Exo Carry Bag

 - Bags are really just an accessory for me, but honestly, I love the design of the Exo bag's stand. The stand allows the bag to sit a bit flatter and lower than previous models, which is a good thing for me. As someone that likes to carry, I appreciate the little things like being able to pull a club out of the bag without having to dislocate a shoulder by pulling it 10 feet in the air. It's a small thing, but a very nice detail. There is also plenty of storage, good water resistance and a very well padded strap system. My one complaint about the bag is the center section of the bag strap isn't the most comfortable I've had, but it's a very small complaint overall.

Shoes - Skechers Go Golf Elite V3

 - The now discontinued Skechers Elite V3 shoes have been my favorite since trying them on a few years ago. The new V4 series is just as comfortable, but seeing as I grabbed a few pairs of the V3 models before they were gone, I'll be keeping my feet comfortable with these for a while yet. That said, Skechers team, if you want to send me a 10.5 in the new model, I'd love to test them out for you. Of course, the one thing that I wish is that the V3's or V4's came in a spiked design as well as the spikeless that I have now. During the winter months, courses in the Pacific Northwest get more than a bit mushy and it would be nice to have a tad more grip, but it's not a deal breaker for me at all.

Cart - Clicgear Rovic RV2L - Sun Mountain C130 Cart Bag

 - When the need arises for a round where I will be pushing a cart, I went with the value-line ClicGear Rovic RV2L push cart and use the Sun Mountain C130 Cart Bag on it. I picked up a 2017 model of the C130 last winter and love the storage and the individual club dividers that it offers. If I didn't carry so much in the evenings, I would easily have made it my daily bag, but I'm just not able to cart as often as I'd like to, so a stand bag is a must.

So, that's the bag for the start of 202 and what should be in my bag for the PAT in April of next year. Things are getting dialed in nicely and feeling much better than they were in August of last year. It's hard to remember that I only had about a month of play on that bag when I attempted the PAT last time, so this should be a much more successful run this time. I'll keep pushing numbers through my Flightscope Mevo and getting the bag dialed in on the course so I am ready to go low when I need to.

Finding The Fairway Again...

The past few months have been a blur, and not in a good way. Life, work and family have made my posting schedule a bit crazy to say the least. Of course, part of that failure to post was due to the fact that I was so worried about making higher quality content, I just didn't post much of what I did have. Today, that changes.

As I began shopping for the gear I would need to "up my game" on this channel, I realized I was falling into the same trap that many golfers fall into on the course. New gear doesn't make you shoot any better. So as I began my 2020 What's In The Bag video, I realized that I had drifted too far from the original message of the channel and blog and that I needed to get back to my roots. So, here it is.

Welcome back to Back In The Fairway...

Back In The Fairway Update: October 2019

Well, that was much closer than I thought it would be, but here we are at the end of October and I still haven't made a single video this month. It's amazing how quickly times gets away from us when we are focused on our long-term goals and not thinking about the little things. Unfortunately, over the last few months, this has become one such "little thing" but here I go on an attempt to fix that in a hurry.

So October has come to an end and this is an update of how things are going on multiple levels. First up, The Journey To 100 continues, albeit a bit slower than planned. Between the long hours with the dual job and the lack of being able to really plan my meals better (especially the timing of them) I haven't lost (or gained) much over the summer. Hopefully with a bit slower schedule this winter, I can get back on the loss-wagon and see some further results, but for now, things are just holding steady.

Next up, on the Going Pro front, It's been a long time since I've really updated my progress on the PGA PGM program. Unfortunately, that's because I am in "stall-mode" on it waiting until my next PAT attempt. The good news is that the PNW Chapter has set the preliminary dates for the tests and the first one is scheduled for April 22, 2019. With a qualifying score at that event, I can move on and begin working towards my PGA membership.

Other than that, things are quite busy, but slowing down now. The weather is still gorgeous up in the Pacific Northwest, but the nights are getting colder and longer with every passing day. This will continue to be the case as we lose about 5 minutes of daylight a day (and a huge chunk beginning on the 4th of November as we fall back an hour) until late December. Then the days will begin to get longer again and before you know it, Spring will arrive and it will be golf season again.

That's the update for this month. Don't forget to click the video above and subscribe to the channel. I'll be doing a 100 Subscriber Giveaway when I hit that number. Thanks so much for following along!

Grab An Amazing Driver For 50% Off!

If you've been on the fence about upgrading your driver, this could be the moment you've been waiting for. Earlier this year, Wilson debuted the winner to the Driver Vs. Driver Season 2 television show. The winning design, dubbed the Cortex, had become the most adjustable driver that Wilson has ever produced. When combined with the shaft options that the Fujikura Atmos Tour Spec range offers, the Cortex garnered praise from just about everyone that touched it.

Unfortunately, that fanfare faded quickly as the price tag of $499.99 was announced. While the driver performed "just as well" as everything else in its class, a few minor flaws and non-tour status left the Cortex off most people's short lists early in the year.

Months later, the Cortex price has fallen, not once, but twice. Currently major retailers are offering the club as low as $249.99. This includes the "Fast Cage" design that redistributed massive amounts of weight to the correct places for maximum performance. The extra long slide track offers greater spin control and the ability to tweak the performance of the club to fit nearly any swing. The Cortex also features a "heel/toe" weighting system that allows for the driver to be set up with either a fade bias or a draw bias by altering the weight pattern. Finally, and probably the most exciting piece of the Cortex, is the top of the line Fujikura Atmos Tour Spec shaft options. The club is offered in the Atmos Black (low launch, low spin), Blue (mid-high launch, mid spin) and Red (high launch, high spin), which will allow virtually any golfer to find the right shaft for their game.

Overall, the Cortex is an amazing value in the sub $250 price range. If you are int he market for a new long stick, this could be the time to grab one before the setup you are looking for is gone.

Back In The Fairway Update: September 2019

Well, that went quickly. Once again, another month snuck by me and my busy schedule. Not only did I not have time to get much playing done, but I didn't get many videos posted either. Hopefully as the daylight becomes a bit less prevalent in September, I will have more time to get some additional videos shot and edited for everyone. For now, here is a basic update of what's happening in the world of BITF.

Going Pro: With the failed PAT attempt last month, my progress is being put on hold until next spring. The additional time will come in very handy to get clubs dialed in and make sure everything is ready for the next run. Knowing that a few holes doomed my chances, I can now work on the shots I need for those select holes and get things all dialed in.

The Journey To 100: Yep, everyone almost forgot about this one, did they. Well, the journey hasn't ended, but I've pretty much spent the last few months floating in the 240's... Some days up, some days down. The Keto-verse seems to tell me that sometimes things like this just happen. Others say it can be stress induced. I'm more inclined to think that it's my schedule - and having a dinner (or later night "meal sub") after 9:00 at night when I get home from the course. Still, the process continues and I will reach that 100 pound mark.

Other than that, as I said, I'm hoping that things slow down a bit over the fall and winter months so that I have some additional time to shoot some great content for you. Remember, subscribe so you know when I post the latest content.

Golf Thoughts: Is Soft Really Slow?

Recently, one of my favorite sites around, MyGolfSpy published their 2019 Golf Ball Buyer's Guide and the outcry from fanboy's on every side of the arguments they made are still being heard today. In a nutshell, MGS simply stated that soft compression golf balls are slow golf balls.

Again, the internet divided itself over that statement, but is that really all there is to picking out the right ball for you game? Just like all the steps involved in club fitting, a ball fitting is no different. While, once again, MGS delivers a great starting point for many players, dialing in the right ball for your game is up to you and how you swing the club.

The most important thing to remember when you read any online reviews or equipment buying guides is that it will offer you a good starting point of where to look for what you want, but probably won't have the "perfect" item for you as the top rating. If you're able to cut through the marketing gimmicks and try a few balls out, you'll start down the path to finding the right ball for your game. Remember, I usually play the Wilson Zip ($.74 a ball in a two dozen pack) during the wet winter months as the performance of the ball just doesn't matter in cold/wet conditions. I save the $4 AVX's for the summer time when I need a ball that performs better.

Anyways, here is the link to the MGS Test Results: https://mygolfspy.com/most-wanted-golf-ball/

Read up on their results and let me know what you think about all of this in the comments below.

Back In The Fairway Update: August 2019

Let me begin by saying I'm sorry that summer has totally gotten away from me here. While I started out this adventure with the greatest intentions of posting weekly, or even a few times a week, the dual-career life has definitely caught up with video posting and editing time.

That said, I made it back for a quick update on the channel this morning and hopefully, I have found a schedule that will allow me to get a bit more done over the next few months in highlighting my adventure towards becoming a PGA Professional and getting back to just making some golfing content you will enjoy watching.

Thanks so much for watching and I'll try not to be too much of a stranger in the future.

Going Pro: Becoming A PGA Golf Professional - Episode 02

The first step to becoming an PGA Apprentice is the PGM Qualifying Test. While I've been in position for 2 months now, this is the first official step I'm taking in the PGA Professional Golf Management Program. My qualifying test is slated for early tomorrow and it is made up of a 70 question test that covers the program, the history of the PGA and the rules of golf. While I'm not really nervous, I'm a bit anxious. Hopefully it all goes well and I will have a great report back in the next episode.

If you have any questions about the PGM program, leave them in the comments below and I will do my best to answer them for you.

Golf Thoughts: What Is A Scratch Golfer?

As if there is nothing better to talk about in golf, I found myself listening into a debate in the cafe at my course that made me chuckle, then become concerned. This table of gentlemen was discussing the actual qualifications for being a "scratch golfer" and if you could really be a scratch player if you didn't play the courses from the tips.

Now, I have my own thoughts on this matter, but I would love to hear your's in the comments below!

What is a "scratch": golfer to you?

Golf Fitness - The Journey To 100 - The Reboot - Week 44

I know, it's been far too long since I've had a Journey To 100 Update, but I've been a bit busy. As many of you may remember, in April, I accepted a new role in the golfing industry and have started down the path to becoming an official member of the PGA of America. This will be a long and winding road and it is definitely taking up far more of my "free time" than I expected it to. So much so, I hadn't really noticed it had been almost a full month since I updated The Journey To 100.

Still, keeping on track with Keto has proven to be a bit easier than I thought. I do think the relatively long days (I'm up at 5 AM and in bed by 11 PM most nights) are slowing my progress, but the goal is to keep plugging away and keep getting those "non-scale victories" every day. Now, before I ruin the next video series that I'm trying to start, here is a look at the Week 44 numbers.

Starting Weight: 318.6
This Week: 242.0
Total Loss: 76.6

A 2.6 pound loss for the last four weeks is nothing to be upset about. Again, the long days and crazy schedule are definitely not helping things, but progress is progress. I'm hopeful that I can make a few changes to my eating habits over the next few weeks to speed up the drop a bit again, but it will just take a bit of time to get the right foods at the right times going forward. For now, I'll enjoy the little losses and the bigger gains - like being able to carry my bag again without feeling any back pain or being worn out after just a few holes.

Again, thank you once again for following along on my journey and I promise I will try and get more frequent updates posted soon.

Golf Fitness - The Journey To 100 - The Reboot - Week 40

It's time for the big "40"!

Yes, this is week 40 for me in The Journey To 100 - The Reboot. Now, yes, I did skip out on Week 39, but really, can you blame me with this crazy schedule that I have been on? Honestly, I'm just happy to see the changes continue to happen is simply amazing. This week, I had planned on having some before and after images, but I didn't want to hold up production on this one just to get to that point. Instead, especially with the summer schedule I will be on, I am going to hold off on the comparison a few more weeks (actually 12 to be exact) and do the full 1 year comparison. Enough rambling on, here are this weeks numbers...

Starting Weight: 318.6
This Week: 244.6
Total Loss: 74.0

The Journey To The USGA Mid-Amateur - Episode 6

Today marks a serious turning point in The Journey To The USGA Mid-Am series. As what I can only be described as a shocking development, the journey has come to an end once again this season. Now before you panic, no, everything is fine. My game is shaping up nicely and my putter is slowly returning to form. Everything is going about as well as could be at the moment,, except, I'm no longer going to be an amateur golfer.

As of this week, I have begun my trek to become a golf professional. It will be a long hard road ahead, but I look forward to giving you the insight on becoming a PGA certified teacher and how the PGM course works. Make sure to fasten those seat belts and hit that subscribe button - this is going to get wild!

Golf Fitness - The Journey To 100 - The Reboot - Week 36

As I begin to close in on Week 40 of my journey, it is great to see that the Keto way of eating is still producing such great results. I'm back posting after being on Vacation for Week 35 last week with another great report. Week 36 was a phenomenal week as my drop for the two weeks was over two pounds. Again, it shocks me that this steady as she goes style of dieting is working so well, but I'm going to keep on it until I reach my 100 - and then some.

Golf Thoughts: How Much Is Too Much For New Clubs?

For the first time that I can recall, a major manufacturer of golf equipment has shattered the glass ceiling and come out with an iron that has a $500 list price. Now that isn't a SET of irons that cost $500, but it's one club! Yes, $500 drivers are becoming the norm, but how much should you spend on a new club or a new bag? Here are my thoughts on the issue, but what do you think? Leave a comment below and let me know how much you think you would feel comfortable spending on clubs and how long should that investment last?

Golf Fitness - The Journey To 100 - The Reboot - Week 33

Yet again it's time for my weekly weigh in on The Journey To 100. Last week was a bit slower with a one pound loss, and week 33 continued the slow and steady trend with just a 0.2 pound loss. Still, a loss is better than holding steady and even better than going up this week. Again, this seems to be how Keto works, so I'm not going to go into panic mode, though it is time for some new batteries for the scale. Anyone have any deals on a CR2032 battery, let me know!

Other than that, it was a quiet week and things continue to roll forward. Hopefully this time next week I will be under 250 pounds for the first time in a long time. The numbers are below for those following along.

Starting Weight: 318.6
Current Weight: 250.8
Total Loss: 67.8 pounds

Golf Thoughts: Should The Players Be A Major?

One of the hottest topics around at the moment is if golf should add The Player's Championship to the Major counts or not. Honestly, my opinion on this is worth next to nothing, but I'm going to give this a resounding no. There are four majors and there should always be four majors. Unless you are going to remove one of them (and a case could be made for the PGA dropping and the TPC being added) I think it is a pointless thing to even bring up.

The PGA Tour has turned most events into a media spectacle which is a good thing, but they are so caught up on giant purses and the crowd experience that they may be damaging the game more right now than helping it. My change of direction for them would be to reinvest some additional funds into the lower towers and the LPGA Tour to grow the game and allow MORE people to make a decent living at it rather than line the pockets of the top .001% of the players that actually win an event.

I'd love to hear your thoughts and comments on this whole debate below. Do you think golf needs more Major Tournaments oar will adding more detract from winning a Major?

Week 32 is in the books and it's another good week! Even after playing in a tournament on Saturday and being out all day, the Keto diet once again held its own against the munchies and I survived with another small loss. Equipment Review - Aris Golf Balls - The Hero

When choosing a golf ball, there is no shortage of choice or confusion. From the good old distance balls that feel like rocks to the latest and straightest from the premium ball manufacturers, choosing the right pill for your game isn't easy. Fortunately, after months of testing different balls in just about every way I could, I have found a clear winner for my bag.

Surviving the cut that included balls from just about anyone that I could get my hands on was a ball that is sold by a smaller company  our of California. This 4 piece "tour" ball, though I hate using that term to describe anything golf, related, is called the Hero and it is available from Aris Golf. Yes, you have probably never heard that name before, but it would be great if you'd hit the link below and check them out.

About two seasons ago, I took a test drive with all three Aris models and found that the Hero was an absolutely phenomenal ball with just one major issue - the cover was too soft for my budget mindedness. You see, at that point, I wanted a lower cost ball that would last a round - which the Hero will not - at least not without some serious scars. Still, I LOVED the ball. As my search continued for this season's tournament ball, I was drawn back to Aris when I found one of them in a box in the garage.

The Hero is an absolute perfect fit for my game. The ball flight is easily adjustable based on how you strike it. The attack angle that I get from it causes it to stick to almost any green around. It's also a fantastic trajectory off the tee and longer clubs as well. It's not too low that it causes distance loss, but it also doesn't balloon too high and cause a lack of roll out. Overall, the Aris Hero just fit my game very well.

If you are in the market for a new ball, check out the three offerings from Aris. They have the distance model - the Scout, the higher performance model - the Hero and one that sits between them in - the Captain.

The Pro Golf Series: Tournament Recap - White Horse Golf Club

Well, that didn't go as planned...

Saturday marked the opening to the 2019 Pro Golf Series tournament schedule and I was there ready to make a statement. I was going to go out and put up a number that would scare everyone off the course, and boy did I ever! As the final hole came to a close and I tapped in for birdie from three feet, I had just completed something that I had never done before... Ever...

Now, I'm not going to ruin this by telling you my score, but watch and see how fickle golf is. One hole you're on top of the world and the next has you begging for the round to be over.

Simply put, this game is designed to destroy humanity, I'm sure of it. At the same time, though, when you hit that shot that makes everything in the world stop for a split second while you enjoy it, there's no better game on the planet.

Equipment Review - Cut Golf Co. Blue Ball

I have to admire the folks at Cut Golf Co and their amazing commitment to deliver a tour quality ball at a completely ridiculous price. Now, I may ave been a bit rough in the video, but I don't want to underestimate or undervalue the Cut Blue golf ball in anyway.  This ball simply performs - and that is exactly what most people want from a ball.

The distance of the Cut Blue is spot on. The control is fantastic. The lower, penetrating flight was deadly accurate and the decent angle was spot on. Overall, the Cut Blue performed as well or better than every ball I tested this winter and easily could have (and would have) found a home in my bag for the 2019 Tournament Season.

That leads me to my "issue" that came up and why they won't be in my bag this season - availability... I placed my order as Cut "ran out of stock" on the Blue (though I didn't receive an out of stock notification at any point in time. I actually emailed 4 days after the order went in and then was told that they were back ordered.  The balls were expected to be in and shipped before the end of February, but then March came and there was another delay.

Unfortunately, that delay cost me too much time to get the ball in my bag for the first tournament of the season - or at least letting me have enough practice time with the ball before the first tournament of the season. It also brought up the worry of supply issues down the road as well. Would they have the ball available when I needed more, and if not, how long would it take to get them.

Perhaps you think I'm putting too much emphasis in ball selection here, but let's round this out really quickly. The ball is the only piece of gear that you use on EVERY shot you take on the course. From driving off the tee to a 3" tap in putt, that ball is involved in everything you do in every round. We go out and spend thousands of dollars on drivers, irons, bags, etc... yet, when it comes to balls, we grab a dozen of this or that, or worse yet, dig them out of the water and use them on the next hole. It's not rocket science, but it's one of the most important decisions you can make about your equipment and it is one that you should really shop around on before making a choice.

Unpacking all of this into one closing thought, I think the Cut Blue is one of the most stellar values out there for the lower handicap golfer. The performance was stellar, the price is phenomenal and the only issue that I can bring up with the ball is the cover durability. So, if you are in the market for a high performance tour ball, but aren't concerned with the longevity of it as much as the performance, check out the folks at Cut Golf Co and their Blue series ball. You won't be sorry you did, but you'll probably be sorry if you don't.

After struggling for the first time in months during week 27, week 28 gave me a small drop to edge back closer to the lowest weight I've had so far in The Journey To 100. Will week 29 continue that trend or do some drastic changes need to be made to get things back on track?

Winter Golf: No Golf In Seattle Right Now

Normally, Seattle is pretty mild during the winter with just a few days of light snowfall. For the most part, we keep to our rainy reputation from October through March.  This winter has been a bit different so far. Just a  few weeks ago I did a lives stream of when I was stuck in an on course snowstorm at Echo Falls. Still, that's the rarity here, nut so far, February has been rough.

In this video, I give you an early morning look at how the weather is as well as a few pf my favorite drills to do when on course - or even at course practice sessions can't happen. If you'd like to see these drills actually done, let me know in the comments below!

Equipment Review: The Titleist ProV1 - New Vs. Refurbished Test

I have to admit that I haven't liked a Titleist golf ball in almost 30 years. I date back to the Professional 384 or whatever that name was back in the early 1990's. While things have changed in the ball game, ever since that fateful day that I switched from the Professional to the Maxfli HT100's I've only looked back on others from the fairway as I out-drove them all day long. Still, there must be something to the ProV craze, right? I mean it's the ball that all others use to measure other balls, so maybe I need to take a hard look at the newer model.

Once again, sticker shock hit when I priced out the nearly $50 a dozen ball, though many retailers have last year's model on clearance for just under $40. Even then, the nearly $3.50 a ball experience couldn't be all that. That's when I found my "refurbished" dozen price at www.lostgolfballs.com and decided it was time for another comparison. I new sleeve of ProV1's vs. a dozen refurbs. The price was almost the same, but would the performance measure up?

I'm not going to beat around the bush on this update. It was a bad week. Not only did the losses stop, but there was a big gain to boot. Watch the update and listen to the rambling thoughts that ran through my head as I tried to process my first gain since starting the Keto diet in August.

Playing A Round: Snow Fall At Echo Falls

The first YouTube video that I shot for the "Back In The Fairway" channel was shot during a snow storm at Echo Falls last year. I didn't know the plan for the channel at that point in time, but since then, I've figured out most of it. Today, I managed to sneak out on Super Bowl Sunday to get a quick nine hole in before the wet weather returned this week. Unfortunately, I wasn't quite fast enough.

By the 15th hole, yes, the same one as that first video from way back when, the snow was falling and the greens were getting covered. Follow along the 15th as I try to play and video as much as I can to take you down the snowy hills of The Golf Club at Echo Falls. It wasn't the way I had planned on videoing today, but it was fun.

PS - This was a YouTube Live Stream, so make sure you subscribe to the channel and lick the bell to be notified when I go live on YouTube from the course (or anywhere else for that matter!)

Golf Fitness - The Journey To 100 - The Reboot - Week 26

After missing my week 25 update with a serious cold, I had to make sure to get this one up on time. Could the magic of Keto (it isn't really magic, but it sure seems like it sometimes) overcome the drain of having a cold?  Could another week of losses be in the cards or did they finally slow? Even worse, could there have been a gain?

Follow along on The Journey To 100 as I try to lose 100 pounds and get healthier and improve my golf game (as well as the rest of my life!)

Sorry, No New Videos Happening This Week

So, this was me last weekend on a flight to Long Beach for a company trade show. While the event was amazing and it was great getting to meet so many customers face to face, it did have a horrible side effect on my golf story telling – I’m sick, or at least I feel like I am. What I mean by that is that I have a really sore throat and a stuffy nose. While it isn’t debilitating, it does make it tough to get through a video without sneezing or hacking.

So, I didn’t want anyone to think that I am skipping out on anything or trying to be sneaky about things, it’s just doing videos while sick is zero fun – and for the record, probably not all that interesting to watch. That said, I do have a few videos in the hopper ready to shoot as soon as my voice is back and I’m not sneezing all over the camera.

  -  My Thoughts On The PGA Tour Merchandise Show and the stuff there
  -  The Journey To 100 Update – I’m skipping week 25 and going straight to 26 next week
  -  The Journey To The Mid-Am: Episode 5 – Where is the game at and what needs to happen next?
  -  The Journey To The Mid-Am: Episode 6 – Tournament Series Coming Soon!
  -  Equipment Review: LostGolfBalls.com: Refurbished Titlelist ProV1’s vs. New
  -  Equipment Review: Building A Budget Golf Bag

So, those are just the videos I have coming soon. Hopefully I can get this cold under control and get them shot and edited this coming week. If there are topics you’d like to have covered, please let me know by emailing backinthefairway@gmail.com or let me know in the comments below.

Equipment Review: Callaway Chrome Soft X - New vs Lostgolfballs.com

Is the high cost of golf balls taking a toll on your budget? Would playing a "higher quality" ball help your game? If you are one of the golfers that is just sick and tired of paying $3 to $5 a ball only to have it end up in the water on the 2nd hole, take note, there's someone who says they can help.

In this video, I take a look at a game changer in the golf ball industry, Lostgolfballs.com. How does their 'refurbished' Callaway Chrome Soft X stack up against a brand new one? Does the ball perform as well? Was there a distance loss? What about their level of service and how easy it is to place an order? Basically, can Lostgolfballs.com get me a ball for less that performs as well as the new in box version from a more expensive store? Watch and find out!
